A motorcyclist died early Saturday in a hit-and-run collision on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista and authorities later detained a driver who returned to the scene.

The motorcycle had been heading north near Main Street around 3 a.m. when he was struck and thrown from his bike, according to OnScene.TV. The vehicle continued north.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol closed the lanes for approximately one hour for the investigation.

Chula Vista police officers who helped with the closure were blocking a northbound I-5 on-ramp when a male showed up in a vehicle with heavy front-end damage and wanted to speak with the officers.

The man, believed to have been the driver who struck the motorcycle, was held for questioning.
