Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins has claimed a runoff position in the race for state Assembly in the 79th District, pulling ahead of Lemon Grove Mayor Racquel Vasquez during the lengthy vote count since March 5.

Sharp-Collins, a Community Engagement Specialist for the San Diego County Office of Education, has 30.3% of the vote to Vasquez’ 30.1% in unofficial final results.

Sharp-Collins called on Vasquez’ supporters to back her in the general election against La Mesa City Councilman Colin Parent, who received 39.6% of the primary vote.

“With just over 60% of the total vote for myself and for Mayor Vasquez, it is clear the 79th Assembly District supports women, women’s rights to reproductive choice, and making our district an equitable, environmentally sound, accessible, and affordable place to live,” said Sharp-Collins.

She has won the endorsement of the California Democratic Party, the California Labor Federation and Secretary of State Shirley Weber.

Parent is backed by the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, YIMBY Democrats of San Diego and Rep. Scott Peters, among others.

The district, which stretches from southeast San Diego to El Cajon, is currently represented by Dr. Akilah Weber, who is running for state Senate.
