Andrew Hayes lost four votes from his lead over Democrat Kevin Juza Monday in the race for second place in the 75th Assembly District behind fellow Republican Carl DeMaio.

Hayes, president of the Lakeside Union School District Board of Trustees, has a 556-vote lead, 22,799-22,243, 18.7%-18.2%, over the small business owner, according to figures released Monday by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.

DeMaio, a former San Diego City Council member, leads the race to succeed Assemblywoman Marie Waldron, R-Valley Center, with 52,653 votes, 43.1%.

It was unclear how many ballots remained to be counted.

The top two finishers, regardless of party, will advance to the general election.

Hayes moved into second Saturday, taking a 560-vote lead, 22,172- 21,612, 18.7%-18.2%. Juza entered Saturday’s count with a 789-vote lead over Hayes, 19,104-18,315, 18.59%-17.83%.

Hayes was endorsed by the San Diego County Republican Party and Waldron, who is barred from running for reelection because of term limits.
