Final certification of the local vote is expected by 5 p.m. on April 4.
In California’s “jungle primary” system, the top two in the primary will advance to the general election in November, so a second-place finish is not necessarily a loss.
President — Joe Biden is the runaway choice in California among the Democrats at 89.2%, while former President Donald Trump beating Nikki Haley by 79.2% to 17.5%.
U.S. Senate — Rep. Adam Schiff and baseball staff Garvey are headed for the runoff in November, with Schiff leading 31.6% to 31.5% for the full term. Garvey is running almost 4 points ahead for the partial term.
Congress — The five Incumbents in the San Diego delegation all chalked up over 50% of the vote in initial returns. Republican Darrell Issa was leading Democrat Stephen Houlahan 62.3% to 14.9%. Democrat Mike Levin was at 51.0% to Republican auto dealer Matt Gunderson’s 25.7%. Democrat Scott Peters had 57.0% to Republican Peter Bono’s 23.5%. Democrat Sara Jacobs had 57.4% with Republican Bill Wells, the mayor of El Cajon, at 39.1%. Juan Vargas, a Democrat, was polling 65.0% to Republican Justin Lee’s 35.0%.
State Senate — Democrat Assembymember Akilah Weber had 60.7% to Republican Bob Divine’s 39.3%
State Assembly — Former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio, a Republican, is leading in the 75th District with 42.9% to fellow Republican Andrew Hayes’ 18.7%. In the 76th District, Republican Kristie Bruce-Lane is ahead of Democrat Darshana Patel by 49.5% to 34.2%. Incumbent Democrat Tasha Boerner leads in the 77th District with 56.9% to Republican James Browne’s 38.4%. In the 79th District, La Mesa City Councilmember Colin Parent was ahead at 39.6% with community engagement specialist LaShae Sharp-Collins at 30.3%, edging out Lemon Grove Mayor Racquel Vasquez at 30.1%. And in the 80th District, incumbent David Alvarez, a Democrat, was ahead of Republican Michael Williams by 59.3% to 40.7%. Assembly member Chris Ward in the 78th District did not have opposition.
Judicial Offices — In the two contested offices, Brian Erickson was leading Jodi Cleesattle 53.8% to 46.2%, and Valerie Summers had 62.5% to Koryn Sheppard’s 37.5%.
Mayor of San Diego — Incumbent Todd Gloria took a commanding lead with 50.0% of the vote to police officer Larry Turner’s 23.1% and former public defender Genevieve Jones-Wright’s 16.0%.
San Diego City Attorney — Chief Deputy City Atty. Heath Ferbert led Assemblymember Brian Maienschein by 53.2% to 46.8%.
San Diego City Council — Incumbents Stephen Whitburn and Sean Elo-Rivera were leading their challengers, with Whitburn at 52.4% to Coleen Cusack’s 21.0%, and Elo-Rivera at 51.9% to Terry Hoskins’ 30.1%. In the race for the open District 4 seat, Henry Foster III was leading with 53.8% to Chida Warren-Darby’s 27.3%. Three other council races are uncontested.
Chula Vista — Marco Verdugo leads in the race for City Attorney with 58.5% of the vote to Bart Miesfeld’s 41.5%. In the two City Council races, Michael Inzunza has 49.5% to 17.6% for Leticia Munguia in District 3, and in District 4, Cesar Fernandez has 23.4% closely followed and Rudy Ramirez with 19.9%. Andrea Cardenas, who had vacated her seat after fraud charges, will not make the runoff.
Proposition 1 — The mental health facilities funding measure has passed narrowly at 50.2% to 49.8%.
