A man was fatally injured during a tussle with another man at a vacation rental in Point Loma Monday morning, authorities said.

The survivor of the altercation, a 44-year-old man, “was released pending further investigation,” according to a San Diego Police Department news release. The SDPD had earlier detained the man and wouldn’t publicly identify him, Lt. Daniel Meyer said.

Officers were dispatched at about 2:10 a.m. to the 2800 block of Poinsettia Drive regarding a male in medical distress following a physical altercation, Meyer said.

Officers located the victim, a 38-year-old man, who was not breathing. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“It appears the residence where this occurred is a vacation rental. A group of people from out of town were staying there,” Meyer said. “During the night, there was a physical altercation where the male who died was physically restrained by another member of the group. While being restrained, the male went into medical distress leading to the 911 call.”

Detectives were investigating what led up to the altercation, the nature of the dispute and restraint, and the other circumstances surrounding the death, Meyer said.

Meyer said the victim has been preliminarily identified, but his name will not be released pending family notification. The San Diego County Medical Examiner is investigating the cause of death.

San Diego police urged anyone with information regarding the incident to call the department’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
