A fire of unknown origin gutted a small Southcrest house late Wednesday afternoon.

The non-injury blaze in the 3800 block of National Avenue erupted about 5:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Crews arrived to find the single-story home engulfed in flames, SDFRD Capt. Joe Amador said. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Neighbors told firefighters it appeared that there had been no permanent residents of the house recently. Mattresses and light furniture were the only furnishings inside the structure, Amador said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
