Jerry Sanders, former San Diego mayor and now president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, announced Tuesday that he and the chamber endorsed City Council candidates Chris Cate in District 6 and Lori Zapf in District 2.
“As a founder of a small business, Chris knows firsthand what it takes to create jobs and get San Diegans back to work,” Sanders said. “I’m supporting Chris because he has the leadership and experience to work with our new Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the rest of the council to fully implement voter-approved reforms managed competition and pension reform.”
“I have worked side-by-side with Lorie Zapf during my tenure at City Hall, and I know she is the right choice to continue to rebuild San Diego’s economy,” Sanders said. “Lorie has been a leader on many of the chamber’s priorities such as fiscal reforms at City Hall and streamlining government so that it’s efficient and effective for all San Diegans.”
The Chamber is the largest nonprofit advocate for the San Diego business community, representing more than 3,000 businesses in the region.
Cate is vice president of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association and a former aide to Faulconer. While a student at the University of San Diego, he started a successful small business in Kearny Mesa that specializes in auto glass replacement and windshield repair.
He is running for council in district 6, which includes Mira Mesa, part of Rancho Penasquitos, Miramar, Kearny Mesa and Clairemont Mesa.
Zapf currently represents District 6, but redistricting in 2011 left her home in District 2, where she is running for election. District 2 includes Pt. Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Bay Ho, Morena, Bay Park and Midway.
Zapf and her husband founded and managed a natural food company from their offices in Clairemont.
