A speeding drunk driver crashed into a hydrant, then a building in Del Mar early Saturday morning, severely injuring himself and closing Jimmy Durante Boulevard for several hours.
San Diego Sheriff‘s deputies said the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS had been northbound on Jimmy Durante at a high rate of speed when it struck the center median around 3:30 a.m., careened across the northbound lane, then back across the southbound lane, hitting a fire hydrant and a eucalyptus tree and finally a commercial building.
The 21-year-old male driver was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to a hospital with moderate to severe head injuries.
Deputies said the accident is believed to be DUI related.
Jimmy Durante Boulevard was closed for several hours while deputies investigated. The Del Mar Fire Department declared the building structurally sound but said the facade needed to be boarded up.
