A South Bay man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of fatally stabbing his live-in girlfriend during a fight that also left him wounded at their apartment near the Sweetwater River, authorities said.

Javar Lester Blueford, 33, was arrested Monday night in connection with the death of 42-year-old Tracie Travis.

Shortly after 2 p.m. on July 27, officers responding to a reported disturbance at the couple’s residence in the 500 block of McIntosh Street in Chula Vista found Blueford conscious and alert but heavily bloodied, and Travis lying face down in a large pool of blood, police Capt. Lon Turner said. Medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Officers said Blueford told them his girlfriend had stabbed him, and he allegedly admitted doing the same to her. Blueford was hospitalized for treatment for several knife wounds.

Officers had responded to a domestic violence call at the couple’s apartment prior to the deadly altercation, police told news crews.

Blueford was booked into San Diego Central Jail, where he was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
