Six motorists were arrested for drunken driving in or near an overnight checkpoint in the East Village area of downtown San Diego.

Six vehicles were also impounded during the checkpoint in the 1400 block of G Street that began at 10:55 p.m. Saturday and ended today at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, said San Diego Police officer Mark McCullough.

McCullough said 2,597 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, with 1,050 of those motorists being screened by officers.

San Diego-are law enforcement agencies, backed by state and local funding, regularly use checkpoints to combat drunk driving.
