A fire at an apartment building in Imperial Beach early Wednesday left six people displaced, but no one was injured.

The blaze broke out in a maintenance shed at the complex on Imperial Beach Boulevard near Third Street shortly after 2 a.m. and quickly spread to a patio area attached to two units, according to San Diego Sheriff‘s Sgt. Luis Chavez.

The residents were able to get out on their own, but the fire damaged the outside of both apartments, the sergeant said.

Firefighters had the blaze knocked down in 12 minutes, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said.

The American Red Cross was summoned to assist the two adults and four children displaced by the fire, the dispatcher said.

Chavez said the cause of the fire was unknown.
