The Chicano Federation of San Diego County is bringing back the Leadership Training Institute Fellows Program this fall.

The training, introduced in 1985, is a 10-month program designed to cultivate and amplify the capabilities of exceptional individuals from the community, equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge and networks. It has not been offered in 20 years.

The fellows program will cover culturally relevant topics that align with the mission of the Chicano Federation and address the specific needs and aspirations of the Latino community, including cultural history and identity, equality, equity and social justice, immigration and citizenship.

Each participant will be paired with an experienced professional for a full-year mentorship. Additionally, in partnership with UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies, graduates will receive a certificate and four college credits after the completion of the program.

The starting date for this year’s cohort is Sept. 9; 20 fellows will be selected to participate in the first cohort. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. July 28.

Those interested in the program may check the Chicano Federation web site for additional information about the application and requirements.

The institute committee, comprised of community leaders including San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas, who chairs the panel, and San Diego City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera, have been actively developing the curriculum and program structure.
