A deputy suffered a minor leg injury Monday as he tried to get out of the way of a fleeing man’s car while investigating a disturbance in Spring Valley.
The patrolman was responding to an emergency call in the 8700 block of Tyler Street when the suspect steered the vehicle directly toward him about 10:15 a.m., according to sheriff’s Lt. Jim Walker.
While the first arriving deputy was approaching the residence on foot, a black Ford 500 with two occupants started to drive away from the residence. When the vehicle neared the deputy, he motioned for it to stop. It stopped — the passenger got out and started to walk away, Walker said.
The passenger had blood on his clothes and shoes. The deputy started to address the passenger as he was walking away when, without provocation, the driver abruptly accelerated and struck the deputy on his knees with the Ford’s bumper. The suspect, later identified as Renee Chan, 30, fled the scene, Walker said.
Several deputies, California Highway Patrol units and a sheriff’s helicopter converged on the scene and a CHP officer was the first to spot Chan, who was taken into custody without incident, Walker said.
Chan was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
