San Diego Padres catcher Austin Hedges went 1-4 with two RBIs in his first career MLB start, as the Friars beat the San Francisco Giants 9-1 at AT&T Park to hold off the sweep.

The Padres had been held scoreless through the first two games of the series, outscored by the Giants 8-0.

There would be no shutout on Wednesday, though, as the Friars scored five runs in third inning to fuel their nine-run performance.

Right fielder Matt Kemp got the party started in the third with an RBI double, scoring third baseman Cory Spangenberg.

After a walk from left fielder Justin Upton, first baseman Yonder Alonso drove in Kemp with a  single.

Second baseman Jedd Gyorko and shortstop Alexi Amarista each drove in a run with a single before Hedges collected his first big league hit, an RBI single to drive in Gyorko.  Hedges would go on to drive in another run on a sac-fly in the eighth inning.

Ian Kennedy got the start and picked up the win to move to 2-1. He thew six innings, allowing one run with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Padres will travel to Arizona tomorrow to start a four-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Odrisamer Despaigne (2-0, 2.95 ERA) will get the start for the Friars against Rubby De La Rosa (2-2, 5.40) for Arizona. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
