The Del Mar Fairgrounds are going to the dogs Saturday — pugs in particular. They will have pawticures, Pug massages, facials and more.
Pug Rescue of San Diego County — an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to rescuing unwanted, neglected, abandoned and relinquished Pugs — will host its 24th annual Pug Party on May 2 at the Paddock Area.
Some 500 to 600 Pugs are expected to attend the event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as well as several Pugs that will be available for adoption. This event is one of the largest gatherings on the West Coast to celebrate the Pug breed and offer Pugs in need.
This year’s theme is “Vegas Pugs,” and organizers are expecting some of the most creative costumes this year — showgirls, Rat Pack, Elvis perhaps?
The annual event also boasts a shopping boutique with Pug-friendly vendors from throughout San Diego County and Southern California, and even as far as Colorado.
Popular contests for Pugs and their owners will be held throughout the day such as costumed-themed competitions, the Wet T-Shirt Contest, the Cupcake Chomp, Pug Talent Show, and the recognition of the Most Distinguished Senior Pug.
A raffle is planned of more than 20 baskets with gifts and unique items. A Pug Boutique has hundreds of Pug-related gifts.
There will be an “Ask the Vet” session to address Pug-specific concerns and one-on-one conversations. A professional photographer will provide portraits, a feature many Pug parents look forward to year after year. Vendors are welcome and an application to sell products and services are on the organization’s Web site, www.pugbutts.com or email webepugs@cox.net.
Admission is $10 for adults, and $5 for youth ages 10 to 18. Kids under 10 are free.
Proceeds benefit Pug Rescue of San Diego County. People interested in adopting a Pug are encouraged to fill out an application in advance. Volunteers are also needed. For all details, applications and photos of available Pugs, visit www.pugsandiego.com or call 619-685-3580.
