San Diego Padres outfielder Justin Upton hit a go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the eighth of the team’s 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, clinching the series victory.
It was the second homer in as many nights for Upton who now leads the team with three on the season.
He went 3-4 with one RBI on the homer and also added two runs.
“When you see it from the other side, for as many years as we did, we’re [now] looking at it first-hand,” said Padres manager Bud Black to Padres.com.
Black and the Padres saw him “from the other side” many times in his six seasons with the Diamondbacks and two with the Atlanta Braves.
Outfielder Wil Myers was the only other member of the team with two hits, going 2-4 with a double and a run.
Upton’s homer set up a save situation for right hander Craig Kimbrel who struck out two en route to his third save of the season.
Right hander Brandon Morrow got the start Wednesday, and after allowing two runs in the first inning he settled down to throw six scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Right hander Joaquin Benoit picked up his team-leading third win of the season in relief.
The Padres bounced back to win two games in a row and take the series after being defeated on Monday night.
They will now travel to play the Chicago Cubs for a three-game series starting Friday.
First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 11:20 a.m.
