For the second time this week, Border Patrol agents at the Interstate 8 checkpoint have apprehended a car smuggling an immigrant into the United States.
This time the driver was accused of driving under the influence in addition to human smuggling.
At approximately 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, a 57-year-old man driving a 1995 Toyota Avalon with a female passenger arrived at the checkpoint in Pine Valley.
The man gave agents permission to search his car but said the trunk latch was broken and he could not open it. After further questioning, the man admitted there was a person in the trunk. Agents opened it and found a 25-year-old Mexican man.
The driver and his female passenger also told agents they were intoxicated. The two were arrested and face federal human smuggling charges.
