A 4-year-old boy drowned Saturday when he wandered into a neighbor’s backyard in Ramona and somehow fell into the home’s pool.

The homeowner in the 16000 block of Swartz Canyon Road was alerted to the presence of the boy in her backyard when she heard her dogs barking, said San Diego County Sheriff‘s Lt. John Maryon.

The woman called 911 at 3:33 p.m. and was given instructions on how to perform CPR by the dispatcher, Maryon said. Arriving paramedics attempted to resuscitate the child.

The child was then airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Child Abuse Unit and Homicide Detail will conduct the investigation. Anyone with any information regarding the drowning should call (858) 974-2321.
