Officers took the male driver of a speeding car near North Park into custody Saturday afternoon after they found a man bleeding in the back seat.

Doctors pronounced the victim dead at a local hospital. He had suffered a stab wound to the lower body, according to San Diego police Lt. Judd Campbell.

Police spotted the wounded man after officers stopped the Ford Focus as it proceeded westbound on El Cajon Boulevard near Texas Street at 3:45 p.m.. The driver apparently was attempting to take the victim to the hospital, Campbell said.

Investigators were attempting to establish what the relationship was between the driver and the passenger, he added.

Because of the investigation, by 4:30 p.m. officers had closed El Cajon between Louisiana and Arizona streets. Texas was closed between Meade and Howard avenues, with the shutdowns expected to continue for several hours.
