A 20-year-old man was recovering Wednesday from a gunshot wound to an arm he suffered when a police officer opened fire on him following a short chase through the South Bay.
Jesus Flores-Azhocar of San Diego allegedly refused to yield when National City police tried to pull him over for a vehicle code violation about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, NCPD Lt. Robert Rounds said.
The chase ended a short time later on East Division Street, where the fleeing driver was forced to stop to avoid crashing his 1994 Honda Accord into another vehicle.
Officers approached the suspect with their guns drawn, and one of them, National City police Cpl. Darren Pierson, fired one shot, Rounds said. It was unclear what prompted the gunfire.
Medics took Flores-Azhocar to a hospital for treatment of a wound that was not considered life-threatening.
Flores-Azhocar allegedly told officers he fled because he was an unlicensed driver and the subject of a misdemeanor warrant.
Pierson has been a police officer for about 17 years, according to Rounds.
