The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System will begin temporary service reductions on select bus routes starting Sunday.

MTS officials said the effort is “to help address operator shortages and maintain reliable service.”

Most of the changes are to high-frequency bus routes and affect both weekday and weekend operations. There are no planned service changes for MTS Trolley lines.

The most significant changes include:

  • Some periods of 10-12-minute frequency will shift to 12-15 minutes.
  • Some periods of 15-minute frequency will operate at 20 minutes.
  • Some periods of 20-minute frequency will change to 30 minutes.
  • Some school-related tripper services may not operate.

MTS attributed the changes to a shortage of bus operators. Though they did not offer a reason, a number of industries have faced labor issues due to employees felled during the COVID-19 surge.

Some service may be added back on the routes in the coming months as resources become available.

“MTS will restore full service as soon as staffing levels allow,” officials said in a news release.

Riders should refer to the Alerts & Detours page, and schedule page for the latest information.

MTS operates more than 100 bus routes and three trolley lines in 10 cities and unincorporated areas of San Diego County. Updated schedules can be accessed on the MTS web site.
