An investigation is under way today in Escondido, where a bicyclist in his late 40s was struck and killed Thursday by an SUV.

The fatality on Mesa Rock Road, north of Windsong Lane, occurred shortly before 7 p.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt.

The cyclist was traveling southbound on his Cannondale bike when he was struck by a southbound Jeep Cherokee driven by a 26-year-old man, Bettencourt said in a statement.

Paramedics took the cyclist to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he died, the officer said. Authorities withheld his name pending family notification.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation.
