High tides and larger than average surf expected Wednesday morning could lead to strong rip currents and minor flooding near San Diego County’s beaches.
A National Weather Service beach hazards statement is scheduled to remain in effect until 11 a.m. A 9:05 a.m. high tide of 6.7 feet is forecast for La Jolla, and meteorologists said beach parking lots and nearby streets in La Jolla, Oceanside, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Imperial Beach could experience some minor flooding.
“High tides near or just above 7 feet this morning and elevated surf will generate strong rip currents,” according to the weather service. “There is also the potential for minor tidal flooding along susceptible low-lying beach areas during the morning high tide.”
In addition to the high tides, waves of 2-4 feet with local sets to 5 feet are expected along with rip currents, which will create hazardous swimming conditions.
Forecasters said conditions would improve later today as the tides and surf decrease, but a west-northwest swell expected this weekend will likely generate more high surf and rip currents.
