The Anaheim Ducks American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Norfolk (Va.) Admirals, is being sold and relocated to San Diego in the fall, according to a report from the Virginian Pilot on Wednesday.
San Diego has not had a professional hockey team since the loss of the Gulls in 2006.
The team would presumably play in the Valley View Casino Center, formerly known as the San Diego Sports Arena. That’s where the Gulls played during their time in San Diego, and the arena holds more than 4,000 more seats than the Admirals previous venue.
The move to the West Coast is part of a movement for NHL teams on the West Coast to move their AHL affiliates closer to where they play.
During league meetings later this month, the AHL will discuss creating a new Pacific Division for teams on the West Coast.
