A mental competency hearing was postponed Wednesday until Friday for a 71-year-old man accused of stabbing a woman near Belmont Park because her smoking bothered him.
Terrance Alphonce Behan is charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the stabbing that occurred near Belmont Park last summer.
About 10:30 a.m. on July 18, Behan allegedly stabbed a 54-year-old woman in the chest in the 3000 block of Mission Boulevard, then threatened a man and his family. She survived.
Behan is also charged with one felony count of making a criminal threat.
A judge must decide whether Behan is able to understand the charges against him and can assist in his own defense. If deemed incompetent, he will be sent to a state mental hospital for treatment until he is deemed fit to stand trial.
