San Diego Chargers 2014 first-round pick Jason Verrett was placed on the injured-reserve Saturday, the team announced, and will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a labrum that is torn in three different places.
After Verrett’s labrum did not respond well to cortisone shots during the week, both parties decided surgery was the best option. Verrett is expected to make a full recovery, and according to a UT-San Diego, he could be ready to participate in team activities as early as April.
The rookie corner has not played since injuring the labrum against the Broncos on Oct. 23, and will end his first NFL season with 18 solo tackles, four passes defended and one interception.
With the move of placing Verrett on injured reserve, the Chargers also announced the outside linebacker Melvin Ingram was added to the roster, and will be active for this week’s game against the Oakland Raiders.
Ingram — the Chargers 2013 first-round pick — had been out since suffering a hip injury against the Seattle Seahawks on Sep. 20, and being placed on the “Reserve-Injured, Designated to Return”.
San Diego also announced that they released linebacker Cordarro Law, and activated safety Adrian Phillips from the practice squad to take his place.
