The Port of San Diego will hold a public celebration Saturday of the completion of the first phase of a $31.1 million project to beautify the downtown waterfront.
The party, which begins at noon at the foot of Broadway at North Harbor Drive, will feature musical groups, street performers, children’s activities, a zip line and a craft beer area hosted on a boat.
The event celebrates the completion of the first phase of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan, a joint effort by the port and city of San Diego to improve the bayfront between the B Street Pier and Navy Pier.
The walking area beside the water was widened to 105 feet and lined with jacaranda trees. A restaurant building was constructed, with a tenant expected to open for business next year, according to the port.
The project also included infrastructure upgrades like better drainage, repaired roadways and improved utility services.
A formal ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony is set for 3:30 p.m., with Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Bob Nelson, the chairman of the port’s board of commissioners.
