A non-injury natural gas leak forced evacuations in Little Italy on Wednesday.
The flammable fumes began wafting through the area shortly after 11 a.m., when a construction crew accidentally ruptured an underground pipeline while digging at the intersection of India and West Date streets, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Emergency personnel cleared everyone out of businesses and restaurants along half-block stretches of both roads while utility crews worked to fix the problem, SDFRD Capt. Joe Amador said.
The leak was under control by 3 p.m., and the evacuation order was lifted a short time later, the captain said.
