The nuclear attack-submarine USS La Jolla stopped in San Diego Tuesday en route to Norfolk for her decommissioning and future use as a moored training ship in South Carolina.
The sub docked at Naval Base Point Loma, where it was based during the Cold War.
The La Jolla completed the last deployment of its 33-year-career on Sept. 3, returning to Pearl Harbor after a 35,000 nautical-mile voyage that included port visits in Okinawa, Japan, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.
It was the first submarine to successfully fire Tomahawk cruise missiles while submerged, and was the first to deploy a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle for underwater rescue and special operations.
Commissioned in 1981, La Jolla is the 14th ship of the Los Angeles-class of submarines.
