Despite widespread coronavirus closures, some beaches in San Diego County remain open to shut-in residents seeking fresh air.

The city beaches in Coronado and Oceanside are open, as are California state beaches, though parking lots are closed to discourage crowds.

San Diego shut down its playgrounds, trails and beaches on Monday after crowds gathered over the weekend in defiance of social distancing orders.

Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas and Solana Beach also closed their beaches, trails and parks on Monday, while Imperial Beach and the Port of San Diego announced similar closures on Tuesday.

“You need to stay close to home and get your exercise there,” said San Diego Lifeguard Division Chief James Gartland.

The county on Monday ordered cities to close beaches and other public spaces if they could not ensure social distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
