Train service south of Solana Beach will be halted Saturday for emergency track repairs following a bluff collapse in Del Mar.
The collapse south of 15th street occurred early Friday afternoon after heavy rains. No injuries were reported.
The North County Transit District said trains can still operate safely at restricted speeds and will continue to do so until 6 a.m. Saturday, when the repairs are scheduled to begin.
The repairs for the washout will require excavating, setting new steel plates in place, and filling with concrete slurry
Both Coaster and Amtrak passengers will be accommodated by a special bus connection during the repairs. Normal train service is expected to resume on Sunday.
“Safety is NCTD’s top priority,” said Matthew Tucker, the agency’s executive director. “NCTD is committed to acting proactively to ensure that passenger and freight operations can be safely operated.
“NCTD and the San Diego Association of Governments are advancing phased improvements to make the bluffs more resilient and prevent service impacts like this washout,” he added.
