A half-size replica of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to go on display at the downtown San Diego waterfront today.
“The Wall That Heals” will be unveiled in an opening ceremony at 3 p.m. Thursday at Tuna Harbor Park, which is the site of other memorials and statues honoring San Diego’s military history and is adjacent to the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.
The 250-foot-wide traveling wall, which has the names of more than 58,000 Americans who fell in the conflict in Southeast Asia, has been to 350 locations since its debut in 1996.
The exterior sides of the trailer that carries the wall open up to become a mobile museum.
Inside, cases display photos of service members whose names are found on the wall, along with letters and memorabilia left at the monument in the nation’s capital, according to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which organizes the tour.
The museum also includes a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War.
The wall will be on display 24 hours a day through Sunday.
