For the fourth holiday season, the Timken Museum of Art will burst with color in “Jewels of the Season,”a glittering display Nov. 22-Dec. 31 of holiday ornaments that will traverse overhead throughout the Timken’s Central Gallery.
The Timken will feature the Hord and Schlappi collection of ornaments consisting of elaborate filigree and whimsical designs.
A selected portion of the collection have adorned the Timken holiday tree since 1988, but now visitors get to experience the beauty of nearly the entire collection of more than 1,400 of these treasures. Adding to the holiday atmosphere will be a model train display by the San Diego Model Railroad Museum that will travel above the entrance way’s canopy.
Timken has partnered with San Diego State University Schools of Art + Design and Theatre, Television, and Film to create a multimedia design to showcase the holiday ornament treasures.
The Timken also offers a special acknowledgment to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum for adding to this holiday exhibition.
Executive Director Anthony Ridenhour and his staff served as consultants on the elaborate model train layout through the Timken lobby and has loaned one of the museum’s beautiful HO-Scale unpainted brass train sets to encircle the Timken’s Christmas tree.
This authentic model train replica is a locomotive and three Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe baggage, lounge and coach cars. The Timken has reciprocated by lending a small collection of its “Jewels of the Season”for display during the holidays at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.
Also, the “Holiday Workshop: The Art of Jewels of the Season” Timken is offering two workshops to design your own “Jewels of the Season-inspired” ornament. The workshop is designed for beginners and seasoned crafting professionals to create an heirloom-quality treasure in the style of the original artists, Hord and Schlappi.
Using glittering gems, swirls of color and elaborate filigree, workshop participants will be guided through the process each step of the way by the Timken’s teaching artist, Elizabeth Washburn.
Cost of the class includes all the materials and holiday refreshments.
