The District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday warned San Diegans about a nationwide online scam in which emails are sent to people advising that a background check has been run on them.
Authorities said the emails are not coming from a trusted source and anyone who receives one should not click on any links, which may install malware on the recipient’s computer and provide the sender with a person’s entire contact list, turning he or she into an unwilling spammer.
According to authorities, it is very unlikely someone has run a background check on the email recipients. When law enforcement and private investigate agencies conduct background checks, there are no notifications sent out, authorities said.
