A resolution drafted by Assemblymember Todd Gloria that signals California’s support for a national “Green New Deal” passed the state Assembly Tuesday on a 47 to 14 vote.
“Climate change is a global emergency and an existential threat, and we have to treat it that way,” said Gloria, a Democrat who represents the coastal San Diego area and who is running for mayor. “AJR 7 would signal California’s support for the policies found in the Green New Deal — much of which California is already leading the way on.”
The Green New Deal is national legislation introduced by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey that aims to address climate change and economic inequality. The name refers to the Depression-era New Deal, which featured social and economic reforms and public works projects.
The California resolution asks Congress to “adopt climate policies, including those that might be adopted under the Green New Deal, that build upon California’s programs that have reduced greenhouse gas emissions while improving air and water quality.”
The resolution now goes to the state Senate.
