San Diego State received an oral commitment from Keith Smith on Tuesday, a 6-7 wing player, who is currently a junior at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle.

The commitment comes nine months before the nationals signing period for prep basketball players, but Smith was enamored with the Aztecs style of play, dating back to when the team played UConn in the Sweet Sixteen in 2011, when Smith was just a seventh-grader.

Smith fits the mold of what the Aztecs usually recruit.

With his lengthy frame Smith is able to shoot, drive to the basket and pass above average, and was given a four-star rating by all major recruiting services.

He has also accumulated a 3.9 grade-point-average in his high school career.

According to U-T San Diego, Smith took his official visit to SDSU two weeks ago and immediately connected with the coaching staff and players, who he said he felt like he had  ‘known forever’ after the trip.

He watched as the Aztecs defeated Utah St. on Jan. 31  and was impressed with the atmosphere at Viejas Arena.

Smith also has offers from Arizona, Gonzaga, Oregon, Washington, Cal, Oregon St. and Washington St.

His junior season at Rainier Beach was cut short due to a knee injury, which he had surgery to repair last week, and will take the spring and summer to rest rehabilitate.
