San Diego CIF playoff pairings will be announced on Nov. 1 after Point Loma’s Pointer football team plays its final regular-season game at home against league foe Mission Bay on Oct. 30.
For the first time since October 2024, the Pointers have lost two games in a row, losing to Lincoln High and Cathedral Catholic in recent weeks.
The 42-6 loss to Cathedral last Friday was particularly tough for the Pointers, as the bigger, recruited players from Cathedral Catholic exacted revenge on the Pointers for beating the Dons on their home field for last year’s homecoming game.
In Friday’s blowout loss, the Dons put constant defensive pressure on the Pointers that led to short gains on the ground and frequent scrambling by QB Ryder Watson.

The Dons, on the other hand, mounted a successful ground game and connected on long passes, several for touchdowns, taking a 28-0 lead into halftime. When they scored with 6:08 left in the third quarter to go up 35-0, referees conferred with the Pointer coaching staff and the rest of the game was played with a running clock.
The Dons scored once more in the fourth period before the Pointers scored on a pass from Watson to Ryan Cleator as time expired. Referees did not allow a PAT attempt by the Pointers.
Point Loma head coach Ryan Price declined to comment after the game.
While closer, the 31-17 loss to Lincoln High two weeks ago was frustrating because Pointer coaches felt it was a winnable game. The Pointers outgained the Hornets 349 to 283 yards.
However, turnovers marred the outcome. The Hornets recovered a Pointer fumble in the red zone to end a strong first possession and later intercepted two Pointer pass attempts.
Cleator opened the Pointer’s scoring with a field goal on the first play of the second quarter. Later scores came on a run by MJ Fowler and a pass from Watson to Collin Scott.
For the game, Watson had 263 yards passing and also led the run game with 55 yards, often gained while scrambling away from Hornet defenders.
Looking ahead, Mission Bay, currently 4-5 overall and 0-2 in Western League, was moved up two leagues by CIF this year after a 10-0 regular season in 2025. They also lost to Cathedral and Lincoln.
Mission Bay are currently on a three-game losing streak in which they have only scored nine points.
EXTRA POINTS:
The Pointer JV team is 7-2 after losing to Cathedral 43-7, while the novice team is also 7-2 after a 16-0 loss to Cathedral. The combined score for all three teams is 101-13.
Pointer coaches are hoping for a high seed and a first-round bye in Div. II playoffs with a home game in the second round.
