The San Diego Padres announced Wednesday that outfielder Matt Kemp will miss the five remaining games of the season because of an injury to his right middle finger.

Kemp had an MRI on Wednesday that revealed that a tendon in the finger was strained and partially torn.

“Every time I swing, it got irritated – sharp little pain,” Kemp said to the San Diego Union-Tribune. “I wanted to keep going, but they thought it would be better for me to sit this one out.”

The news comes a day after Kemp became the first Padres outfielder to reach 100 RBIs in a season since Greg Vaughn did it in 1998.

Health was a concerns for Kemp when he was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the offseason, but he finishes with a team-high 154 games played and 149 starts in right field.

After hitting eight homers in the first half, Kemp will finish the year with 23, along with 80 runs and a .265 batting average

The injury is not expected to require surgery and the recover process could take from four to six weeks, according to interim manager Pat Murphy.
