The mayor of Chula Vista on Friday joined the chorus of congratulations for the Sweetwater Valley Little League team, which was eliminated from the Little League World Series on Thursday night.

“Their exciting extra innings game last night was a great exhibit of the outstanding season this team has had,” said Mayor Mary Salas. “We are all so proud of these fine young men, their manager, coaches and parents. They are great examples of our city of champions.”

The Sweetwater Valley team fell 9-7 to Texas’ Pearland West all-stars on a two-run walk-off home run in extra innings. The setback cost the SVLL players a chance to play in Saturday’s U.S. championship.

The Sweetwater Valley Little League is based in Bonita, in an unincorporated region of the South Bay, but it draws some players from northeastern neighborhoods of Chula Vista.

The league is setting up a free public homecoming, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m., featuring radio station 93.3, singer/songwriter Frankie J., the Padres “Pad Squad,” and cheerleaders from Eastlake and Bonita Vista high schools.

The Chula Vista City Council plans to issue a proclamation honoring the team at its Sept. 15 meeting.

The team received congratulations via Twitter from the Padres, Chargers and numerous local media personalities.
