San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister announced Tuesday that his office has started mailing more than 38,000 reminder notices to area landowners who failed to pay one or both installments of their 2015-16 property taxes.

Taxpayers late on their payments incur a 10 percent late fee and a $10 charge.

By June 30, taxpayers who still have unpaid bills will accrue an additional penalty of 1.5 percent per month, or 18 percent a year. He said the total amount due on the delinquent accounts is $91.7 million.

“The good news is delinquencies are down 4.8 percent this year compared to last,” McAllister said. “We want to make sure taxpayers with unpaid bills don’t end up owing even more after June.”

He suggested taxpayers use the mobile-friendly online payment system at sdtreastax.com. They can also sign up for free email notifications so they won’t miss a future property tax deadline.

The county Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office sent out almost 987,000 bills to property owners last September, with more than 98 percent of the total revenue collected.
