In one of the closest elections in San Diego County, political newcomer Serge Dedina on Tuesday claimed victory in the race to be mayor of Imperial Beach.
“Now I look forward to bringing our community together to improve the quality of life for all in every neighborhood of Imperial Beach and working with council members to expand the involvement of residents in city government and make city hall more resident and business friendly,” he said in a message to supporters.
Final, unofficial results from the Registrar of Voters showed Dedina with 2,199 votes to incumbent Jim Janney‘s 2,157.
The results will not be certified until Dec. 2, but Dedina, who is an environmentalist and author, said it is “improbable that the outcome will change.”
