Firefighters from Oceanside and Carlsbad used the Jaws of Life to free”Spike,” who became trapped in less than a foot of space between the metal containers while playing with the kids on the South Oceanside Elementary School playground on Horne Street about noon, Battalion Chief Pete Lawrence of the Oceanside Fire Department said.

Photos taken at the scene show the dog about six feet from the front opening between the heavy storage containers, which Lawrence said was narrower than the back.

Crews used their equipment to pry the containers farther apart, and Spike’s owners coaxed him out, Lawrence said.
