San Diego County Credit Union hopes to set a Guinness World Record for document shredding on Saturday, inviting San Diegans to bring old papers and try to fill more than 40 trucks with shredded remains.

The free event is scheduled for  7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium in the northwest parking lot, located at 9449 Friars Road.

SDCCU is planning to set the record for the most paper collected in 24 hours. Last July, the credit union collected and shredded 168,147 pounds of paper, setting the current record and filling 40 trucks .

“SDCCU is happy to provide this free service to the community. We hope everyone, including SDCCU customers, families, friends and members of the public, brings their old personal documents for shredding and, once again, puts San Diego on the map with a new world record,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck.

Shred-It, a leading document destruction and recycling company, will be onsite to shred documents at no charge. Paper documents should be removed from binders prior to shredding; however, staples and paperclips are okay. The first 1,000 guests will receive a free gift.

In addition to free document shredding, LinkServe E-Waste will be onsite to collect and recycle electronic waste. This includes TVs, PCs, laptops, printers, toner cartridges, hard drives, monitors, keyboards, PDAs, networking equipment, landline and cellular phones, power supplies, copiers, scanners, fax machines, stereos, home entertainment systems and VCR, VCD and DVD players.

SDCCU began hosting its free Shred Day events in 2007 and has since collected, shredded and recycled more than 720,000 pounds of documents .
