A soon-to-open cafe at UC San Diego’s Geisel Library will be named after longtime benefactor Audrey Geisel, the school announced Thursday.

Audrey’s is scheduled to open in May, according to UCSD.

“I’m truly touched that so many of my friends at the UC San Diego Library have decided to name this new cafe after me,” Audrey Geisel said.

“Even before we established the Dr. Seuss Collection here at the library many years ago, I felt that this was a very special place, and certainly worthy of my continuing support,” said the widow of Ted “Dr. Seuss” Geisel. “I know that Ted felt the same way, so I’m very pleased to know that our support will help to provide the resources and the services — not to mention caffeine — that today’s library patrons need to stay on the cutting edge.”

The 3,000-square-foot cafe has been under construction for a couple of months on the main floor of the library’s east wing, putting it close to the most-used study area.

The cafe, which will have seating for 50 to 75 customers, will be operated by the university’s Office of Sports Facilities, which manages Peet’s Coffee & Tea near the RIMAC Arena.

Coffee and tea for Audrey’s will be supplied by Barrio Logan-based Cafe Virtuoso, known for its organic and fair trade coffee and tea.

San Diego’s Bread & Cie will provide pastries and other breakfast items. The cafe will also offer salads and sandwiches, according to UCSD.
