Civil rights activists on Wednesday will protest alleged education inequality by the Poway Unified School District.

Chris Garnier, a parent of two Poway students, said he is banned from going near the schools after protesting a principal’s actions.

The National Action Network, founded by Rev. Al Sharpton, will hold a rally Wednesday to fight against “infringement of the First Amendment right to free speech.”

“Mr. Garnier is an individual who we believe is a strong advocate for the plight of minorities in a status quo environment in North County of San Diego,” read a press release by the group. “The filing of restraining orders against people in the community who represent different voices is an attempt to quiet the call for diversity in the Poway Unified School District. The restraining order that is currently on appeal against Mr. Garnier is unjust and won’t be tolerated by our communities of color.”

The group is asking for a “a conversation of diversity in the Poway Unified School District and justice for Mr. Garnier and many others who have been restrained from speaking on issues important to their communities in the North County.”
