Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting by San Diego police of an allegedly armed burglary suspect outside a home near Loma Portal, authorities said Wednesday.
Officers initially responded around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday to a check-the-welfare call in the 2700 block of Nipoma Street. But the call soon was updated to a residential burglary in progress, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the homeowner, who said firearms were kept inside the residence and that no one had permission to be there.
A SWAT team responded. While officers attempted to establish contact with person inside, gunshots were heard from inside the residence, authorities said.
At about 9:20 p.m., a man allegedly holding a gun exited from the front door. Police fired at the man, striking him. Paramedics responded, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:40 p.m. No police officers were injured.
The sheriff’s Homicide Unit is conducting the investigation, per the countywide memorandum of understanding related to use of force by law enforcement personnel. The San Diego Police Department also will conduct an administrative review. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased man or the names of the officers involved.
