A man’s body was found in Ocean Beach Wednesday afternoon, hours after a surfer flagged down a police officer to say he had seen remains in the water.

The early search, near the OB Pier, involved swimmers, a boat, a jet ski and a helicopter, with plans to call in a dive team, according to OnScene.TV. It was called off at 8:45 a.m.

The surfer told authorities that he saw a white torso and bald head floating in the water. San Diego police, firefighters and lifeguards responded to the scene.

The body was ultimately located around 2 p.m. just to the north of the initial search area.

Lifeguards and police have conducted several searches for a missing kayaker since he was reported missing Friday, city spokesman Jose Ysea said. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the dead man’s identity.
