A woman was killed and a man seriously injured early Sunday morning when their vehicle left the freeway in Mira Mesa and struck a tree and light pole.

The accident occurred around 1:15 a.m. on northbound Interstate 15 north of Carroll Canyon Road.

The driver died at the scene and her passenger was transported to a hospital with major injuries.

The California Highway Patrol blocked several lanes of the freeway for two hours during the accident investigation.
