A fire Tuesday morning in Shelltown destroyed a shed, an RV and several other vehicles, the fire department said.

The fire started around 10 a.m. in the 2000 block of Osborn Street, near Balboa Elementary School.

When fire crews arrived the shed was fully engulfed and spreading to the RV, San Diego Fire-Rescue Batallion Chief Steve Salaz said.

The fire displaced a person and a dog, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation but Salaz said it was most likely accidental. Neighbors told a news photographer that residents of the house were burning trash in the backyard Sunday.

There was a lot of the trash and debris in the backyard, which contributed to the intensity of the fire, Salaz said.

“If the shed was completely empty, there wouldn’t much of a fire load in there,” Salaz said. “But since that shed was packed with flammable materials, it creates a lot more heat, which creates more intense exposure for both the structure and the surrounding vehicle.”

Firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to the home.
