A district attorney’s investigator was superficially injured by ricocheting bullet fragments Wednesday when his partner opened fire on a charging dog in front of a Jamacha-area home.
The pit bull ran out of the house in the 7700 block of Dry Creek Place toward the pair of detectives as they were doing follow-up work on an ongoing case shortly after 10 a.m., authorities reported.
One of the investigators shot the dog, and bullet shards hit his colleague in the leg, said Steve Walker, spokesman for the county District Attorney’s Office.
Medics took the injured man, whose name was not released, to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment of minor wounds.
Animal control personnel took the 48-pound terrier, named Free Pit, to a veterinary clinic in Bonita, where she underwent treatment for three entry wounds to her chest and throat and a collapsed lung, county Animal Services Department Deputy Director Dan DeSousa said. She was expected to recover.
Walker declined to disclose the nature of the case the two detectives were working at the time of the shooting.
